Growing Up Online By PBS

The program "Growing up online" from the PBS website successfully portrayed the different issues that come with a society, emphasizing on the youngest generations being so dependant on the internet and social media. It has become what was mentioned as a tool that was primarily used by adults when computers and the internet became more accessible, but then became a domain ruled by teens and children as it has come to be embedded to be used in their everyday lives. This program shed light on the issues that have surfaced with young people being more confident on the internet and with technology as opposed to having much less confidence and being less focused without the use of technology. This digital era has changed how students retain information in classes, becoming more enticed with learning with technology. It has also opened up a whole new world for children and teens looking for any sort of acceptance or constant praise which would often lead to an addiction to social media and positive reinforcement, causing them to become disconnected from people in the real world.

The program touched upon the more negative outcomes of this internet obsession, which included the awareness of predators online. This issue was mentioned to be handled by teens and children quite well due to them being very alert and informed on potentially dangerous characters trying to obtain their personal information. Basically they know what to look for and how to stay away from it, never entertaining suspicious messages or invitations sent to them. The program also unfortunately touched upon the cyber bullying topic which in one example resulted in suicide. It was mentioned how kids used to be bullied face to face but would end their day to go home which was considered a "safe haven" back in the day. But cyberbullying made it past this and onto the screens of adolescents who cannot escape the immense amount of consistent ridicule. Cyberbullying and predators were the two main red flags discussed in this program because young minds can forget how there are absolutely no secretes on the internet. Once it is uploaded, it has made its mark forever and although the internet is an amazing tool where we have access to practically everything, this also means everything has access to us.

  1. I love the last sentence of the second paragraph, " ...although the internet is an amazing tool where we have access to practically everything, this also means everything has access to us." It's such a scary though, but it's reality. Everything we post online(even this blog haha) can be accessed by anyone, and opens the doors for people to see into our lives. Just from the internet, a person can learn about our physical appearance, and our opinions. People can also find out where we are, what we're doing and what we're going to do. Like you said, the internet is indeed an amazing tool, we just have to be responsible and be aware of how we use it and what we use it for.

  2. As you said, this digital era has changed how the students retain information in classes, I agree with you that it can effect them in both good and bad ways. Today the learning techniques used by teachers are very practical and help students absorb information much faster and they are getting creative day by day but like you said, being connected too much to technology can cause so much problems in ones life. It can either change your life in a good way or destroy it.
